This is an interesting piece that -- for lack of a better phrase -- hit home for me: I'm close in age to you; the way Sorkin's work has affected my life is very similar to the way in which you describe its affect on yours; and I also think that Sorkin's television work has fallen out of critical favor. Or maybe it's just that Sports Night and The West Wing have become improperly devalued.

Anyway, this comment doesn't have much purpose and doesn't add anything to your discussion. I just know how you feel, man. For me, though, even with the triumph of The Social Network (and to a lesser extent, Moneyball), nothing can alter the permanent revision my fandom underwent after Studio 60. Like you, I still want everything Sorkin does to be an unquestionable success. But the guy's fallible. Studio 60 taught me that. And as much as I might try to defend him, and defend the ways in which some of his work has been utterly brilliant, I can't deny that he appears to have an ego the size of Montana and has done some really shitty work. I thought the review by Linda Holmes articulated that beautifully.

I don't know. At least Sorkin keeps getting chances to go out there and see if there's anything left. It's better than slipping on a tangerine peel in the locker room.
